About the Name
The word "dirigo" holds a special meaning for residents of the Pine Tree State. Latin for "I direct," the word appears on the state seal and on signs and landmarks across Maine. For us, the word is both metaphorical and personal. In a quartet, each member takes a turn "directing" the group as an equal. There is no permanent hierarchy, no winner or loser. There is only giving and receiving.
The magic of ensemble-playing lies in the recognition that we are better together. When our creative energy fuses with rhythm, harmony, and balance within an ensemble—when these gifts are shared and received in turn—only then can we tap into something bigger than any one of us can create on our own. Viewed in this way, "Dirigo" is much more than just a motto or a name. It is the substance that binds us and draws us into a deeper reverence for self and other.
